Community isn’t necessarily what you construct (though that has a little to do with it). Community is what naturally occurs when people are left to their own devices.

You can WANT to be friends with someone, but if they don’t want to be friends with you – well, it ain’t gonna happen.

So yesterday, I sat down to really figure out who my community is. I looked at who liked my posts and who commented on them more than a few times. I also looked at my social media accounts wrote down who interacted with me the most. Not all of these people are bloggers, so when I created my community blog roll, it didn’t include everyone on my list. So, I also made sure to create a Top Reads list on my twitter account that includes all of those folks with blogs, plus all of those without.

I posted the blog roll on my blog and now have an easily accessible reading list both there and on my social media accounts.

Sifting through thousands of accounts took a little time and effort, but I think it was worth it, and that I will reap the reward. It made it much clearer who I was aiming to reach out to and why, and who was reaching back and why.

A very valuable and valid way to spend my Saturday.

I walked away with a better sense of what matters to me online and who/what fills my cup when I’m here. I look for conversation, positivity, honesty, vulnerability, connection, and growth. People who make me think. People who make me laugh. People who make me feel like I’m part of something bigger than myself.

You probably know who you are. But, if you are reading this, your in! If I’ve left your blog off of my blog roll, please let me know. I’d gladly add you. (see the sidebar or scroll down if on mobile)

I’ve also noted the memes I most enjoy. I don’t always manage to post for these memes but they’re worth looking into if you need a little writing inspiration.

I look forward to continuing and deepening this relationship of ours.

xo,
Brigit

  1. Hi Brigit,
Love your work. Is the amazing artwork yours as well? Love the new EJC badge.
Thanks for creating these memes where community can grow. Being a full-time carer, I have very limited time for writing and reading. Not being into fiction, kink or d/s, a journal type outlet best fits my writing style and subjects.
THANK YOU for refreshing the EJC and not letting it die.
All the best in your personal journey and IRL communities.

    1. Thanks for reaching out and letting me know! I will add your site to the community page and look forward to more writing from you.

    2. And yes…the artwork is mine. I like the new look, too! I appreciate the feedback.

  2. I always find community hard to pinpoint too but you have a lot of names there so it looks like you have a lot of engagement around about you. Thank you for including me as part of that.

I also love your new artwork. You are very talented. Missy x

  3. What an amazing idea and something I think I am going to do too. Also I’m going to check out your community to see if there is more reaching out to be done on my part. Also loving the art work!

    1. Thanks, I’m still trying to get my page updated to where I like it. It needs a freshen up.

  4. Community is a strange thing, I have learned, and another thing I have learned, is to just be myself and do this thing I do. I love how you have spent so much time on pinpointing your community, and thank you for having me there on your list. Looking forward to read more of your work 🙂

    1. Just being ourselves and doing this thing is all any of us can or should really be doing.
