Moving Images:

I don’t watch much porn. I find it mostly disappointing, probably because of expect too much of it. But it certainly has its purpose, and I fall back on it in times of need, when I can’t summon the necessary fodder in my own imagination (which doesn’t happen all that often). I’ll be honest, too: I have a slim voyeuristic streak, and watching amateur-style videos on places like youporn can be an inspiring tool for masturbation.

I’ve watched a few full-length movies, but let’s face it…no one watches porn for the story or the acting, and that is probably where I go wrong, expecting those things should exist in an entertainment world where it just isn’t cost-effective to put too much money into writing and expensive actors.

I know some porn is better than others, and there are companies out there trying to improve the genre, making it more enticing for those of us who want more from porn.

For now, I will stick with erotic movies that put story and acting first, because for me, it is the emotion that makes it sexy.

Still Images:

I do love a good erotic image. So I’m more drawn to print porn than film or video. I was first pulled in by vintage photos, and I had a Playboy subscription for years (it actually was for the articles). A good sexy image (even amateur photography or drawings) can get stuck in my brain and stay with me, inspiring stories and poems. I look at images and imagine the movement, and I think that right there is what makes them work on me. They allow me to be a player in the “action.” I am less a passive viewer, as I am with moving images.

Written Words:

I’m not sure how many people count written smut as porn, but I do…and I would definitely count it as my favorite type. Much like images, it triggers my brain to get more involved. I can’t be passive when I read (or listen to the audio version) of a naughty story. I have to build those images and characters in my mind. That, by far, is the sexiest thing porn can do, and to me, it is the reason porn exists.

The ultimate purpose of porn is to trigger the imagination and turn people on.

And even though we all believe we are very different, there are a few base instincts and desires that most humans share. Desire for sex is one of them. And because that instinct is so base and so widespread, porn is hugely popular. It appeals to a diverse audience.

And over the years, subgenres of porn have emerged to meet the tastes of all kinds of people.

I imagine porn will continue to evolve with the human race, bit it will never disappear. Sexual desire, especially base swxual desire is too much a part of us. No amount of shaming or judgment will cause that to disappear. In fact, it will likely only ignite it.

There are more options for porn out there today than have ever existed, and it is more accessible than it has ever been. While I worry about people relying too heavily on film and video porn (because it is such a passive activity, and can actually numb a person, sexually, I believe), I think it is awesome that written smut is on the rise.

While erotic film and erotic writing are my preference (I don’t need all the intricate details of the workings of sexual organs to be turned on…in fact quite the opposite), porn and smut have their place and their function

3 Replies to “What are your thoughts on porn?”

  1. I feel like porn has a place and the vast array of it out there means there is a lot to satisfy most. However it can be a turn off to have to trawl through porn to find something that really ticks the right boxes. Something that is or feels real is what I like, although I’m more inclined to look at erotic pictures. It is interesting to see it from others perspectives how they view porn.

    1. I am always overwhelmed when I go to an adult store and look at the porn. So much of it is so “over the top” in my opinion. Maybe my tastes are too bland for porn. Nobody makes “Two people who love each other having romantic sex…close up.”
