We don’t get a lot of snow here in the far Pacific Northwest. But when we do, it has a habit of shutting pretty much everything down, since we don’t really have the infrastructure to deal with it. This past Friday, when schools were released early due to severe weather, it took me nearly 2 hours to get home, and along the way I passed at least 20 cars off in the ditches. Once I made it, I knew I wasn’t getting out for awhile. The forecast says snow will continue through this coming week. They’ve already cancelled school for Monday, and government offices are closed, too. Last time I checked, we had 17 inches…and it’s still snowing.

Now, having lived in places that commonly get several feet of snow, I can see that it does seem a bit silly from the outside. But this is really uncommon for us, and our city simply wasn’t ready to deal with it. The upside is that the kids in our neighborhood are getting to sled and build their first snowmen…build snow forts and throw snow balls.

So we grown-ups figured we’d get in on the fun, too.

  1. Brrr! You’re brave!

It is definitely unusual for us. And you’re right; we lack the infrastructure to deal with it. Plus, HILLS. Icy hilly terrain is hellacious.

Sledding sounds much more fun than the hill-slide I took this weekend.

I cracked my car up trying to get home Friday, slid down a hill and landed against a guardrail. And I was raised (and learned to drive) in much worse conditions. Except, of course, those places had flatter terrain and proper infrastructure to deal with it.

    1. Sounds like you live around my area! They closed down our highway and I couldn’t get home for a couple of hours last Friday. By the time I did, there were so many people off the road, I was glad for my truck. Even so…it’s been a mess these past days. I’m glad the temps seem to be rising and the snow started melting a bit this afternoon (2/12). I’ll be glad to see the snow go.

    1. I’ve seen other bloggers do them and just had to get in on the fun. It made for a few good shots, but it was damned cold!
