Gravity & Remedy
Gravity – the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. Remedy – a remedy or treatment for disease or injury; to set right Well, I finished the novel tonight. And I have to say, that while I liked the book (genuinely) and enjoyed the characters, if I were to give the book a rating out of 5 stars, I’d likely only give this book three or three and a half. It is not a terribly memorable read for me and didn’t make any deep impact on my emotions or psyche. There were some great and thoughtful passages and important…

Intuition & Alchemy
Intuition: a thing that one knows or considers likely from instinctive feeling rather than conscious reasoning Alchemy: a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination Welcome to Brigit’s Book Club! This week, I’m reviewing the first two parts of The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman. Below, you’ll find some of my own favorite quotes and passages, some overarching themes that have begun to jump out at me, and a few questions to get the comments rolling. Feel free to comment here, on Twitter, or on your own blog (just make sure to share the link in the comments!). Also, you are welcome and encouraged to share you own insights and…

Caged Bird
From the banister, I looked down into the closest of the three cages hanging from the ceiling, like chandeliers, above the dining room table. A woman knelt inside, blindfolded and still, the iron bars leaving cross-work patterns on her naked flesh. She was just close enough that I could see a spray of freckles on one shoulder and the outline of an unidentifiable tattoo. As the dinner guests entered, she lifted her head and opened her throat to sing. The notes wafted upward, bouncing against the high-ceiling and falling down like stardust over the room, and I wondered what kind of person cages such beautiful birds and, likewise, what kind…

A Little Light-hearted Witchery
Alright…it’s the first Thursday with our first book! And I’m feeling pretty good about this idea so far. I just started reading the first book pick: Alice Hoffman’s “The Rules of Magic.” I’ve never read any of the Practical Magic series, but I’ve read a few of Hoffman’s other books and have enjoyed them. And the movie, while not any sort of award winner was worth the view. So when I saw this prequel to the series show up in a suggestion list on one of the websites I frequent, I thought it would be perfect for October. I wanted to pick a book that was accessible, fun, and well…this…

Introducing…The Book Club
I’ve always wanted to start a book club (stories matter, after all), but I find myself too busy and too tired to be making cheese plates and cleaning my house for company. But then, I suppose anyone in MY book club would come with a bottle of wine and no expectations of my domesticity. In lieu of an actual physical book club (which requires pants, I thought I’d start a virtual book club. I know some have way more time to read than others, and some of us can barely finish a book in a month, so I’m just going to highlight one book per month. I usually read more than…

Hot, Hot, Hot!
There are a few moments in a marriage that make it into the “remember when…” bag of memories that are pulled out when you both need a laugh. These moments always seem funnier in retrospect than at the time, and make for good story-telling. Like the time I shot cum out of my nose as I fell of the bed trying to get to the sink to spit it out (I know some of you cannot relate to the need to spit out cum, but the point of the story is that I fell off the bed…and that I shot cum out of my nose). Mr. D and I laughed…
